Planes

Looking at other holiday-let sites, this seems to be Rhosneigr's best kept secret - we want to be totally honest with you because if plane noise bothers you, this is absolutely not the place for you to choose for your holiday!

Before we bought this house, we'd been coming every year to the same holiday cottage down in Rhosneigr, pretty much overlooking the runway. One of our slight concerns about this house, was that we would miss watching the planes take off and land.

We needn't have worried! We are right on the flight path and they circle above our house to come in to land. They're low, and noisy - but very exciting if you like that sort of thing!

They tend to fly between 8.30am and 5pm, Mon - Fri, not including bank holidays. Very occasionally, they do night-flying. We've never experienced this, but their website says that means between 6pm and midnight. They announce up-coming dates on their website, but these dates completely depend on weather conditions on the day.

On a "boring" day, you will see Hawks. It's a training base and these are the jets they use. They tend to take off and land in batches, so you do get quiet times in between. If you're lucky, you'll see them doing a few acrobatic moves!

The best views from the house are when they take off towards Holyhead as it means when they come back to land they circle over the house and garden, giving you ample time to get your camera. When they take off towards us, they're there before you know it!

If you're lucky, you will see visiting Tornados and Eurofighters - the latter are big, and VERY noisy. If you're very lucky, they'll fly over twice, giving you time to grab your camera!

The Red Arrows visit frequently too.

Helicopters fly 7 days a week and you'll often see them doing manoeuvres over the sea from Cymyran Beach. Occasionally, big military helicopters land to refuel.

One of our most spectacular sights was in May 2012 at Newborough when we just happened to be in the right place at the right time to see around 30 Hawks fly past together - they were training for the Jubilee Display.
