Buses & Trains

We don't drive, so have used public transport on Anglesey quite a bit.

Rhosneigr and Llanfaelog have a little ring road connecting them. Our house is on the quieter side - most of the traffic goes in and out on the sea side. We are, however, on a bus route for both buses which serve Rhosneigr, and although you won't see a bus stop, they stop right outside our house, by the farmer's gate.

The 45: Rhosneigr - Llangefni

The 25: Aberffraw - Rhosneigr - Holyhead

If, like us, you're from Sheffield, you will find travelling on buses in Anglesey a very different experience! Passengers all seem to know each other, they know their drivers, the drivers know everyone they drive past - and often seem to stop anywhere to pick people up, and drop them off. There's a very happy atmosphere all round!

The only downside - and this is unfortunately very significant in summer - is that the last bus into Rhosneigr arrives at 6pm! The 4s which run from Bangor to Holyhead keep going til 11ish, but it's quite a walk from the the nearest stop (we're talking miles, not yards!).

We're 12 min walk from Rhosneigr station, which is very handy. Last train in from Holyhead is around 7.30pm.

We try to have copies of the Anglesey bus timetable in the house. You can also get them from the post offices and corner shops. You can buy red rovers which allow you unimited travel on any bus on Anglesey, as far as Bangor, for a day. They cost around £7. You can also get one that includes train travel.

It is possible to get right round the island with a couple of hours stop here and there. Buses are good for doing parts of the Anglesey Coastal Path.

Travline Cymru is a great site and they have started putting fare information into it. Use the journey planner and it will tell you how much the journey will cost for a single or return - helping you decide whether it's worth getting a Red Rover instead.

Red Rovers are a great way to travel round Anglesey - it takes a bit of planning to make sure you aren't stranded somewhere though! You can also buy ones that can be used on buses and trains, which means you can stay out a bit longer!
