Llanfaelog & Rhosneigr

Chances are you've heard of Rhosneigr, but probably not Llanfaelog! So where is it, and what does it have to offer?

Rhosneigr is a little village, but a very popular place in summer. It has restaurants, a fish and chip shop, two pubs, even a Fat Face. Llanfaelog is on the other side of Lake Maelog and is much quieter.

We feel our house offers the best of both worlds, being close to the beach and lake, and the shops in both Rhosneigr and Llanfaelog, but also offering uninterrupted views of rolling countryside.

You don't need to go anywhere to find a peaceful spot to relax, or to watch birds - you can do it all from the privacy of the house (this is the view from our garden).

Rhosneigr has 3 beaches. Traeth Llydan (Broad beach or we often refer to it as the Oyster Catcher Beach) is the closest to us and you can reach it by walking down a track past the beautiful lake and along the dunes by The Oyster Catcher - Rhosneigr's most famous restaurant/pub. If you don't stop, you can do it in about 20 mins but it's very hard not to stop, when you're faced with views like this!

It is also a great spot to watch birds and catch a sunset. And on windy days, it's usually a lot more sheltered than the beaches! The planes come in to land over the lake too, so you can usually get some good photos.

Pubs - nearest one is probably the Oyster Catcher at the other end of Lake Maelog. It's a very pleasant 20 min walk round the lake from our house, or 35 minute walk if you go by road. There are torches in the house if you want to walk back via the lake in the dark.

There is also one in Rhosneigr.

Supermarket
Holyhead has a little retail park with a big Tesco, Farm Foods, Wilko and a Morrisons, and there's a Lidl near the train station. Holyhead is probably about 15 mins away by car.

Llangefni is a pretty town in the centre of Anglesey and has an Asda, Iceland, Lidl and Aldi all pretty much next door to each other. Markets are held on Thursdays and Saturdays. There is also a nice nature reserve, The Dingle (Nant y Pandy), which has short accessible walks.

Traeth Llydan has a wide sandy stretch on the Rhosneigr side, and really dramatic rock formations on the other. Anglesey has a very diverse range of rocks and one of our favourite books in the house is Rock Tales. It's for kids and grown-ups, with maps and photos of rocks you can find on the island. One side of the page tells you the geology, and the other tells the fantasy tale of a family of giants who used to live on Anglesey, very imaginatively using the shape of the rocks to say what the giants used them for. The book explains it better than that!!

There is direct beach access from the centre of Rhosneigr - it's handy if you have children or can't walk far, but it does get busy, and is very sea-weedy at low tide! We very rarely go on that bit!

Our favourite - probably because it's the one we know best, is Crigyll/Cymyran Beach down by the airbase. You access it over the River Crigyll footbridge near the golf course. The bridge is about 25 min walk from the house by road - but there's no pavement for the first part. You can also cut down using footpaths that skirt the lake.

This beach is usually very quiet - we mainly see dog walkers. It's about 3 miles long and can only be accessed at each end. As you have to work a bit to get there, it's never hard to find a secluded spot, even in the height of summer. We practically live on it during the summer ;-)

One of our favourite morning walks is to walk along the coastal path from the footbridge, over the dunes and onto the beach about half way along, and then loop back along the beach and river.

If you keep walking, you get to the other end of the runway, which is a good spot to watch planes when they're taking off and landing at that end. On really windy days, you have the choice of retreating into the dunes for shelter.
